Crispy Oven Baked Honey Garlic Tofu Bites
I've been a fan of tofu for a few years now, but I must admit I still don't know what to do with it aside from stick it in stir fry. It's time for that to change! I found I Am A Food Blog's recipe for crispy oven baked honey garlic tofu when I was looking for something quick to make for dinner. It did not disappoint!
I'm very excited to add this as a weekly meal option, and I hope you'll enjoy it as well!
What You'll Need
- 1 package pressed tofu
- 1 tbs cornstarch
- 2 tbs honey
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- freshly ground pepper, to taste
- (Optional) sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds, to garnish
Oven: 400 degrees
Cook Time: 30-45 minutes (flip tofu cubes over halfway through)
First off we'll dry the tofu. This is probably the most important step and also the one I rushed because I was super hungry.
You really want to get the moisture out of tofu before you start cooking with it or it'll stay soggy. I'll sandwich the block of tofu between paper towels and towels, then stick a heavy plate on top for about 30 minutes on each side.
In this case I did it for like 2 minutes on each side and it shows in the end product...
Once the tofu is dried you can cut it into 1/2 inch cubes.
Toss those cubes in with the cornstarch and get them all evenly coated.
Now prep a pan with parchment paper and set out all the tofu bites.
We're ready to bake the bites! The total cook time is 30-45 minutes, whenever the tofu turns to a nice golden brown color.
While the tofu bakes we'll prep the sauce. Combine the honey, soy sauce and garlic.
After looking at pictures of minced garlic I can see now that I most certainly did NOT mince my garlic here...lessons learned!
Remember to flip the tofu cubes to their other side halfway through! At this point they should be a light golden brown.
Around 5 minutes before you take the tofu out, heat the honey garlic sauce in a frying pan until bubbly and thick.
Once the tofu is done it should be a nice golden brown. Because I didn't take the time to get more moisture out I feel like mine could be a little more golden. I'll try this recipe again and update this post with a more accurate picture. :P
Toss the tofu bites in the honey garlic sauce and you're all set! I was looking for a protein-heavy meal so I had mine with black beans and mozzarella...don't judge!
Optional Step: Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
What would you pair the honey garlic tofu with?
